I don't see anything about his performance that takes away from the movie I just can't imagine the dub without him. I liked Thornton's take on Jigo and felt that he brought a cynical, weary side to the character. To be honest, I was never bothered by either of those two. The complaints about the dub stem from Billy Bob Thornton and Claire Danes. Although he has two brief appearances, as the narrator in the beginning and Okkoto, his presence still brings a lot of gravitas to the role. Keith David, though, is the real star of the show. He does a great job of bringing his character to life. I've also always loved Crudup as Ashi-taka his performance sold the character for me. Driver's accent is a bit odd, but her Lady Eboshi is still remarkable and, I think, superior to her turn as Jane in "Tarzan" (released, ironically, that same year when the dub premiered). The latter actress in particular, I think I might prefer to the Japanese VA, because while Miyazaki may have had his reasons, I find Anderson's female voice to give a better impression of an intimidating wolf goddess. In my opinion, Billy Crudup, Minnie Driver, and Gillian Anderson all excel in their roles. This was quite a feat for dubs back then, especially in 1999.Īs far as the performances go, this is always going to be a subjective argument, but I found nothing wrong with them I was introduced to this movie by watching the dub on the big screen at the Angelika Center, and honestly, I can't watch it in the Japanese version no matter how "superior" I'm told it is. The man does an excellent job of striding the line between remaining faithful while rewording the dialogue for natural purposes, and the lip sync is done quite flawlessly. It's not perfect, but it's still deserving of being commended. As far as I'm concerned, I don't think this movie could have asked for a better dub. I really don't see any of the criticisms, to be honest.
